An open letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, denouncing the Security Council's pandering to the Gulf Corporation Council

Dear Secretary Kerry:

The recent Security Council resolution is a craven pandering to the Gulf Corporation Council in particular and to our own country, in demanding that the Houthis suspend War while permitting other States to continue War, including War upon Civilians, including air and naval bombardments.

The GCC facilitate Ali Abdullah Saleh's departure with some 20 to 60 B (U.N. Security Council Experts estimate) in Yemeni money, which he is now at liberty to use in conducting War against his former, and widely unpopular Vice-President.

The security Council would better

-- require all States and individuals to suspend military action,

-- declare Yemen a Failed State, assume a Mandate for its governance, insure that the remaining oil revenues go to providing for food production in starving Yemen rather than into any private hands,

--recover the money that the GCC allowed Mr. Saleh to steal from the  people of Yemen and return it to the people,

-- allow the South of Yemen to vote on partition,

--  and insure a fair  distribution of  revenues from oil and coffee to all Yemeni.

Only then are fair, representative elections possible.

Yemen is in dire peril.  It is time for the United Nations to stop busying itself with pointless pandering resolutions and rescue all Yemeni from the starvation they face when oil reserves dry up in the next few years.

I urge you to at least support Russia's call on all States and Persons to cease fighting in Yemen.  The GCC comes to the table with unclean hanns.  It should be given no special status, and should be condemned for its past meddling in Yemen's affairs.

Your form for email says a response is due in 3 or so days.  I will print your response.

Sincerely,

Durell Douthit

Yemen Southerners Risk Death. Again.

South Yemeni continue to demand a separate government and control of their own Fate, to the extent  the Goddess of Fate and Necessity allows any o us to control his own fate.

Please remember that five million persons in Yemen have no food.  New York Times, 30 Sep 12 .

The United Sates and Saudi Arabia engineered a "settlement" of Yemen protests that allowed the dictator, Ali Abdullah Saleh, immunity from all the death and suffering he caused, and allowed him to flee to Canada with billions of dollars of Yemeni money, which the people of JYemen desperately need.  For Saleh's current activities see U.N. Yemen envoy says former president's camp undermining talks.

I am a staunch supporter of the Southern Separatists.

As a a general principal I support the right of all people to chart their own destiny, including those in the United States.

Persons who oppose power are moved by emotion more than by intellect:  it is not rational to invite early death at the hands of those who have the power to kill you.

And we would still be ruled by Kings Who Rule by Divine Right if not for brave, emotional people.  The emotional people who made the revolution in the English colonies in North America were strongly in favor if freedom, except for women, blacks, those who lived on the land when they arrived, children, and white men who were propertyless.  It has taken a couple of centuries for disenfranchised people to secure their freedom, and the United States Constitution is the most brilliant political creation perhaps since Plato.  For the first time in History the notion that a people could rule themselves became a reality.

See here for lists of active separatist movements worldwide.  I wish them godspeed and wisdom.

See here, here, and here for more on Yemen in this blog.  This blog also contains a lament about drone strikes in Yemen.

Southern secessionists return to the streets
Yemen Post Staff Calling on the Yemeni government to exert restraint in its dealing with southern secessionists, Amnesty International urged on Saturday President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi not to engage the security forces as fresh protests roll out.
“Yemen must ensure security forces refrain from using excessive force during protests planned this Saturday or risk further bloodshed, Amnesty International wrote in a statement.
Haraki leaders (Southern Secessionist Movement) announced upon Mohammed Ali Ahmed’s exit from the National Dialogue Conference early this week that it would return to the streets and demand that the rights of its people be honoured.
Since Saturday, November 30th marks the 46th anniversary of former South Yemen independence from British occupation, the central government anticipated large demonstrations across all southern provinces.
“Protests in Yemen have always been dangerous for activists, with police routinely shooting and killing peaceful demonstrators. However, given the disagreements over the future of the south of Yemen and the charged symbolism of the date, we are particularly worried about what could happen on Saturday.” said Philip Luther, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Amnesty International.
“The authorities must ensure the police respect people’s right to demonstrate freely and peacefully . Even if some elements use violence, the police response must be limited to using the minimum force necessary to counter threats. Firearms may only be used in self-defence or defence of others against an imminent threat of death or serious injury,” he added.
Although the central government has always denied using disproportionate force when dealing with matters related to public order and security, rights groups have systematically beg to differ, arguing that Sana’a had carried on the former regime heavy hand policy.
Amnesty International referred as an example of government abuse to February 21st, 2013 when security forces opened fire onto peaceful protesters in Khormaksar, a district of Aden (former capital of South Yemen). Four people reportedly died that day and scores were injured.
“Yemen has a duty to uphold the right to peaceful assembly and to protect those exercising this right,” said Philip Luther. “The authorities must ensure prompt, independent and impartial investigations when security forces attack peaceful protesters, in violation of international human rights standards.”

Starving, courageous South Yemen, shame of the West

Five million persons in Yemen have no food.  New York Times, 30 Sep 12.  That's a lot of persons.  The Times article is after the jump.

The proximate cause is a global increase in food prices, and affects primarily landless Yemeni who cannot grow their own food. The real cause is infrastructure failure of the government to invest in job-producing infrastructure and enterprises, ahead of the time when Yemen will run out of oil, estimated in 2017.

Ali Abdullah Saleh, the dictator of Yemen who recently transferred power to a colleague in return for total immunity,  is worth $35 Bilion.  Canada MSN Money.

This is one million dollars, in  packes of $100 bills;

This is a pallet of 1million dollars,
made up of packs of one million dollars dollars each.

Saleh has 35 of these pallets.

Saleh made off with a bundle of Yemeni money, none of it invested in the South.

There is no record that Saleh has "pledged" anything, nor is there anything I can find on the Web about where his ill-gotten gains has been sequestered.  A malefactor of great wealth, and not the only one.

According to the Times:

International donors pledged $1.46 billion in aid to the country at a meeting in New York on Thursday. The donors, including China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States, as well as Gulf Arab states, had already promised $6.4 billion."  [Emphasis added.]

Babies are starving today.

To whom will the pledged money go?  If History is the lamp by which to guide our feet , it will go to Saleh's successor, who will distribute it in a way to insure that his regime survives, and that the Southern Secessionist Movement fails.

∼ ∼ ∼  ∼

The Southern Movement is failing.

NZWeek reports:

ADEN, Yemen, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — Yemen’s pro-secession Southern Movement kicked off its first meeting calling for independence for the south from the central government in Sanaa on Sunday, amid the boycott of more than 20 senior separatist leaders.

The Yemeni dictator, supported by the West as usual, retorts, as Persian Gulf dictators always retort whenever threatened, as reported in
Al-Monitor :
During his visit to Berlin yesterday [Oct. 4], Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi accused Iran of supporting southern Yemenis who seek secession.

The dictator with Chancellor Angela Dorothea Merke in the Berlin, least you think the US is the only complicit party.

Typical McCarthy, Bahraini, Saudi, Romney tactic.

If the Movement cannot hold its staring groups together, the youngsters, hungry and with nothing to lose, will take action.  Then we'll see.

Demonstration in Sanaa

I predict a slaughter that makes Syria look a model of civility.

And the dictator will be supported by the West, including United States.

And even facing station, football Rules:

And young people haven't lost all hope.
So don't count the South out just yet.

Or:  Let's move to Tuvan.  Or even Dagestan.  Dagestan is the home of great wrestlers.
